about this trail

Lone Peak Trail

Lone Peak Trail is an 8-foot-wide paved pathway that runs along the south side of Lone Mountain Trail (Hwy 64), connecting Big Sky Town Center to Gallatin Canyon. This 7-mile round-trip moderate route provides a safe and accessible corridor for walkers, runners, and cyclists traveling between neighborhoods, recreation areas, and the canyon.

From Town Center, the trail travels approximately 3 miles to the intersection of Lone Mountain Trail and Highway 191. Along the way, users descend gradually through forested sections, cross the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River, and enjoy views of Lone Peak and surrounding mountains.

At the canyon intersection, the trail connects directly to the Gallatin Canyon Trail, offering an additional 2.5 miles of paved pathway continuing south to Ophir School.

Added in 2023, a new pedestrian tunnel beneath Highway 64 provides a safe underpass connection to the Big Sky Community Park. From there, users can access Little Willow Way, Black Diamond Trail, and other park amenities.

While paved and relatively approachable, Lone Peak Trail includes steady elevation changes — especially on the return trip to Town Center — making it a solid workout for runners and cyclists.

More Trail Details

Despite its paved surface, Lone Peak Trail offers a scenic experience with forested stretches, river crossings, and views of Lone Peak. The lower third of the trail runs near the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River, where you may hear the water moving alongside you.

Keep an eye out for the resident bighorn sheep herd that frequents the north side of Highway 64 near the pedestrian bridge.

Lone Peak Trail serves as a critical transportation and recreation connector in Big Sky, linking Town Center, Meadow Village, Gallatin Canyon, and Community Park through a safe, multi-use pathway.
