The Crail Ranch Homestead Museum had over 200 children visit the museum in 2017 either through a school field trip or a camp visit.
Historic Crail Ranch offers experiential activities held at the museum or brought into the classroom for local students and campers year-round.
The curriculum focuses on the Homestead Era and Big Sky’s ranching roots, beginning with a scavenger hunt allowing children to explore the museum’s artifacts. Several simulated activities help participants experience the challenges of working on a ranch in rural Montana without modern tools, technology and amenities. Activities include gardening, churning butter, quilting, crafting, harvesting hay, learning to rope, and reading and designing ranch brands.
Through old-fashioned games, kids learn about how kids had fun a century ago.
Living History:
In 2017, gifted storyteller Mary Jane Bradbury, visited Crail Ranch and brought along with her a friend…. Nancy Cooper Russell, wife and business manager of Old American West painter Charlie Russell. In 2018, Bradbury brought Calamity Jane to Big Sky.
Stay tuned for who will be coming in 2020. Crail Ranch’s living history events are funded through Humanities Montana.
