July 14th: Hummocks with the Gallatin River Task Force
Traverse the area’s fun, rolling topographic features or ‘hummocks’ created by ice-age landslides. Hummocks Trail is a 3.0 mile loop around a hidden pond and offers views of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff, a volcanic rock formed by the 2.1 million year old Huckleberry Ridge of Yellowstone’s caldera. Learn about how such topography impacts local watersheds with the GRTF.
July 21st: Beehive Basin with Montana Adventure Team
Join BSCO staff and Montana Adventure Team at the Upper Beehive Basin Trailhead to learn about the 7 Leave No Trace Principles while on this 6.6 mile round-trip hike with 1,500 feet elevation gain, majestic peaks, an alpine lake, rocky outcrops, and open meadows. Pack a lunch, and plan to spend about 4 hours on the trail.
July 28th: Photography at Ousel Falls
Bring your smart phone or camera for a 1.6 mile round trip stroll to the falls and back. The Ousel Falls trail descends into the South Fork ravine to beautiful Ousel Falls and has several memorable photo opportunities along the way.
August 4th: Historic Hike at Crail Trail
Wander along the leisurely Crail Trail that traces the historic Crail Ranch meadow with an interpretive guide. Learn about Big Sky’s history on this mellow 2.6 mile round trip journey. Meet at the Historic Crail Ranch and bring sunscreen and water as the meadow has limited shade.
August 11th: South Fork Loop with the Gallatin River Task Force
Short but oh so sweet, this pleasant forested 1 mile loop takes you through the woods and along the South Fork of the Gallatin River. Stop by the river to extend your journey and learn about the watershed ecosystems with the GRTF.
August 18th: Town to Trails Race Prep (Uplands and Hummocks)
BSCO’s annual Town to Trails race will take place this fall. Scout the route through Uplands and Hummocks with a running guide. This hike will be 6 miles round trip. Meet at the stage in Len Hill Park.
BSCO staff is excited to introduce family friendly hikes for children ages 0-5 and parents looking to connect with other families in the community with young children.
